I want to talk to people, understand their views, their opinions, their stories, and use this as the main aspect to my primary research.
To get a sense of where we are, in today's society, with equality, I feel gathering this kind of research is key.
Instagram Survey:
Firstly, I have conducted a little survey on my Instagram. I asked various questions surrounding the topic, to help get a general view on where we are, with my current age group. Equal amounts of males to females answered the questions, and it had around 150 contributors.
Some of the responses did surprise me, some did not. The photo below is of my sketchbook, with the statistics and answers I got.
One of these which really stood out to me was the question 'Would you call yourself a feminist?' and the result for this - 65% said yes, and 35% said no.
The definition of the word 'feminist' is someone who supports the 'belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities'.
If you read this, and the question was posed differently, I think you would find the percentage is a lot higher. This supports the idea that feminism, and being a 'feminist' has stretched far away from it's true purpose and meaning.
Google Survey:
I wanted to get a larger perspective.. I created a survey, majority of them similar to the previous one, but sent these questions to a larger variety of people.
I ended up with around 45 people contributing, from the ages of 14 to 71. Some of the results were expected, but some did shock me.
The younger generation being quite literal, some things they said being things I have heard in the news, not much of their 'own opinion'.
The middle generation, i.e. 18-30, having quite an 'open' view, being 'open' to everyone and the idea of change.
The older generation being quite 'set in their ways', more closed off from change, feeling like there doesn't need to be any.
I was pleasantly surprised with the results of the survey - lots of people took part and gave me so many things to think about.
As I have mentioned before, some people have the view that feminism has been taken away from its true meaning, its true purpose. The questionnaire showed this.
Some of the phrases and answers I have found really useful, in trying to navigate 'where we are' in the sense of equality and our views on it.
Instagram Survey:
I had previously done a survey, a much broader one, and it really helped me get my head around where we were, as a society, on 'equality' and 'feminism'. As my project has progressed, there was a few things I wanted to get my audiences opinion on, prior to my final outcome.
There were a few loose ends I wanted tie; my audience would be my age group, due to COVID, as it would be shown on my social media, and online. Getting their view and opinion was key, to aid my understanding.
