Using Wire✂️
For this weeks workshop, we had a choice of whichever are we wanted to use. I booked the wood, metals and plastics department to test an idea I had a little while ago - see the screenshot below:
I had been thinking to turn my work into a more 3D way for a little while now, so the first thought that came into my head was using this workshop, and trying it with nails and wire.
I got my 2 chosen designs and drew them onto some wood:
From there, I mapped out the nails on corners, and new lines, where I wanted the wire to wrap around the mold the shape.
With the wire, I then wrapped it round each nail, getting the results below:

I ended up with these 2 pieces - one of the female figure, and one of the male. I do really like the outcomes, I feel they are very abstract and unique. I obviously know the designs so I recognise both but I think from another persons point of view, they are a little hard to pinpoint. I was thinking whilst making this, the idea that each nail is an individual - they all add up to make one, everyone working together to get one goal. Everyone talking, and speaking their truth, their story, to help one cause, to help society, to help the community. I think this symbolism links perfectly into my project and the concept I wanted to portray.
I think their were pros and cons of this idea, and this outcome:
Pros:
- I had tried an idea I had been wanting to do for ages.
- I do like these outcomes above, think they have something about them.
- I am intrigued now to see what they are like on a bigger scale.
Cons:
- Very abstract - can you see what they are?
- This specific wire was very sturdy and thick - hard to wrap around an get an accurate shape.
Were these because of the size? What would happen if I scaled this up?
This would help with the designs, and the impact idea I want to continue with.
I then had a chat with a technician who came over and took a look at my work. He suggested using a more '3D' piece of wood, and wrapping the design around it.
I tried this out - the idea was much better than the outcome:
For the one on the left hand side, I used a lot more nails, and pinpointed each section. After creating, I thought how far away from the drawing it looked. I then decided to try and solve this problem with drawing the design on each side, and scaling down the amount of nails. This one was more successful, but still, very abstract.
I don't dislike them, I just feel I was going for a more detailed effect, in the sense you know exactly what the designs are when you look at my work. I can see the figures, again as I know them, but if not, then I think you can't really tell what they are. I think this thought was a lot better than the actual outcome. I am glad I tried it, because it gave the idea a different dimension, but as a piece, I don't want to take this one any further.
Going forwards, I want to see what I can do with the first two pieces, scale and other materials. Thinking about making it larger, and what other resources could I use?
