Unit 4 - Mindmapping💭

We started off our Unit 4 last week - the FMP!

The title is 'Consolidating Practice', meaning this project is ours.

I have always worked for or with a brief, so having none is an odd feeling! Nevertheless, I started brainstorming. As this project is mine, I wanted to start off by looking at the actual criteria. What am I looking for? What do I need to include/surround my project with? From this, I just made some notes, as a place to refer back to whenever I need too.

From there, I went onto the actual project. What am I passionate about? What do I enjoy doing? Researching into? It's about me and my practice, so what areas would I like to look at more? I created a written mind map, with words, phrases, quotes, etc, around 4 topics.

Empowerment. Community. Capture. Mental Health.

All quite vague topics.

Mental health is something I looked at previously, something I can relate to, a topic I have knowledge on - could this be a negative? Or could this be a way to explore through a different perspective?

Capture. One of my favourite past times is photography, as I have mentioned before. Everywhere I go, I'm photographing something! How do we capture moments? How have people done it previously? What did we do before cameras? Looking at the history of the photograph and the impact one can have could be an interesting avenue to go down.

Empowerment and empowering people, specifically women. We live in a society, where even to this day, women are not treated equally to men. We have these standards that a woman should live up too. The suffragettes are a group of women who inspire me immensely. Looking into feminism and it's contrast from then to present day could be something I could do.

Community and celebration was another idea which sparked when I thought about my interests. I was thinking about the current environment we are in, with COVID and the pandemic, and how other communities and time periods have dealt with similar situations. Compare this to other decades - WW1, WW2, 9/11, the Spanish Flu, the Plague, the AIDS pandemic. How did we cope? How did we get through?

After a 'brain dump' of all my thoughts, I took them into visuals, creating these pages below to help get my brain flowing even more. I thought about places, events, imagery, designers, artists and came up with some good starting points for which ever route I decide to go down.
