Black Out Poetry🖤
For our first task, we looked at 'Black Out Poetry'. A TED Talk my tutor recommended, called 'Steal Like An Artist', looks at a man named Austin Kleon talking about a technique he uses when he is 'lost for ideas', or is not sure where he should begin working.
He used this process for writing; we used it for generating some ideas to start off our projects.
I chose a newspaper as my starting point. There is so much information within a paper - such a variety of stories and articles, all on different topics and subjects. I went for quite a random approach - picking out sections with interesting headlines and cutting out the text.
From there, I read through and kept any words which stood out to me, scribbling the rest with a black marker. This left me with a few pieces to work with. I really like working with words. I love the endless possibilities which come with a process like this - everyone's view is different, getting lots of outcomes.
I then went to visualise these. I thought about the actual meaning of the words. What did they mean to me? What does each one remind me of? What events, people, actions do I associate with them? I ended up with these two really nice pages.
I didn't really have a plan. This scares me a bit as I have always been methodical with my work, however, my tutor reassured me that right now, some sense of chaos is good. Brainstorming and having fun with research, experimentation, etc is how you begin a project.
