Reconstruction Workshop✂️
This week, my workshop was based around deconstruction and reconstruction.
I had brought a selection of items from around my house.
The first task was to deconstruct them. I used scissors, a scalpel, a seam ripper and a smash box.
I had no plan really with any of the objects. I just kind of went with the flow and broke them apart where I could.
After this, we looked at mark-making. How could I turn my broken objects into illustrations/drawings?
I chose objects which struck out to me, ones that had interesting shapes. I drew around them, drew from them and drew in continuous line. I think my favourite has to be the one with the repeated pattern. I used a sunglasses lens which I had snapped off, and drew around it, creating this page. I love how appealing it looks to the eye. Thinking about my project, OCD, it really links. Having organisation and routine, things being in order help the OCD not be so challenging. I definitely want to use this piece of mark-making and take it further.
Looking at all my deconstructed objects, the next task was to then create some samples by reconstructing them, but testing the original forms. I had no plan with this either - I just did what came to mind.
For this one, I took material which I had cut up and tied knots in each piece. I then attached these to a wire and hot glued the top to keep it in a ring. I really like this as a hanging piece. I could imagine ones in different colours, maybe changing the sizes, etc.
For this second one, I made a 'bracelet'. I used various material I had cut up - some from a jumper, a dress and a shoelace - and tied them together. I love this one, all the different textures contrast and that pop of red really stands out.
This third one really reminds me of my outcome I made a few weeks ago. See the photo below. I love the colours and how chaotic it looks. It's so interesting how I turned pasta into this mini sculpture.
This wasn't intentional but links to my installation I made earlier on!
This last one I made from the plate I had broken up. Using hot glue, I arranged the pieces into the above. I then wrapped around some string I had found to try and resemble the fact I was putting it back together. I like how it looks like someone had tried to put the plate back together but did a bad job!
I layed out all my outcomes from the workshop, to show my development and how one idea led to another. See the images above.
Some pages from my sketchbook:
Overall, I really liked the workshop this week. I think it's crazy how from a bag of random things, I have made some really fun outcomes. From today, even though I liked the 3D pieces, the mark-making was the most successful thing.
