Surface Pattern and Construction Workshop✂️

Repetition. Multiple.

To start off, we picked a shape and started to visualise this onto paper. I went through magazines and ripped out pages which appealed to me - pages with interiors, pages with landscapes, woodland photographs, as well as anything relating to circles. I then used this as my starting point, cutting and drawing.

I think their are two which stand out to me the most - firstly, this piece.

These pieces aren't necessarily 'circular', however they did start off including circles. I pushed the shapes and they turned out distorted, into something quite odd. Unusual outcomes but their is something I really like. The colour is so bright and bold that is contrasts with that 'dull' grey tone; I think this highlights the shapes even more.

These two pieces I really enjoy - I love the circles creating this sort of chain. I get a real sense of unity within the photo. I then merged the two on top of which looks interesting, however I would like to play with this idea a bit more, maybe having the photos along side eachother, to see what I can create with this.

We then started to take these into more 3D forms, using our visualisation as inspiration. I explored the way to attach the paper - needle and thread, staples, tape, etc. Folding the paper, bending it, twisting it, cutting it. Manipulating those circles to see what outcomes I could get.

This I made out of the excess paper I had from cutting out circles. I love how you can see the curved lines, yet it is still quite geometric, with those straight lines and 'spikes'. The shadow of this piece is really interesting as well, it add's an extra dimension to it, making it look like it's spinning when it's still.

This one here I cut out circles of black and white paper, stapling them together in a cylinder shape. I love the angle when you put your eye through the centre - has such a spiral feel to it.

These are my favourite outcomes I have made. I took circles I had cut, folded then and staples to create these 'folds' which I attached to eachother. I could imagine these as a statement piece on table, different colours and sizes.

This was another hanging piece I made from the excess paper, much more geometric with the squares. I love this photo! The shadows make the piece have so much more depth.

This is the last piece I made with left over circles. I folded and stapled to make this long tube, like before, but turning the circles out. I don't think it's as strong as the other pieces but was still fun to make!

Now it was time for a bit of development. Which piece worked the most? Which outcome am I most excited by and want to work on?

These were my final outcomes from today. I absolutely love them! I think they look so fun and have such an interesting feel to them. I immediately want to hang them, watching them spin to see all the angles. The topic I want to look at for this project is OCD and how in society it is very misconceived; people have a very stereotypical view on what OCD is but in reality, there is so much more to it. I want to try to make a change to this, to get people to understand what it actually involves. Whilst making these, I was repeating these shapes, making them perfect, putting them in specific place to get the exact end product I desired. OCD is very similar - I know as I suffer from it. That repetition and continuously doing an action, attempting to stop that fear, that worry, those thoughts from overtaking your mind. It is a very conceptual take on this workshop however, reflecting on it, it really does symbolise an area of OCD.

Whilst talking to my personal tutor, we were discussing artists and designers who would be good to look at. Marcel Wanders came into conversation. I looked at his work and really, really loved it. I decided to take some inspiration from him and develop this idea a bit more.

After researching him, I found these pieces he created for the 60th anniversary of 'Mickey Mouse'. They are known as 'One Minute Mickey and Minnie' - as he took one minute to paint these white sculptures. I love the chaotic look they have, where he hasn't been careful where he places the paint. .

I wanted to try this style of painting on my hanging pieces. Here are the results:

As hanging pieces, this development with the paint, I think they could be really fun centerpieces.
