Print Session🎨
Using our markmaking pages as inspiration, we headed down to the print room. Keeping the words 'colour and unity' in my mind, I created a series of positive and negative prints, with different objects and the etching press, which I thought conveyed this. Before we started, I was very cautious as I had never done this process before; I was worried about coming up with ideas of substances as well as making sure I understood how the materials and press worked. The first lot of prints, I feel, were very 'jumbled' due to this. They had little thought in them however, I altered this later on. I took a step back halfway through the session, looked at them all individually and picked out the ones I thought didn't quite work, and then changed this. Which colour could be added here to add a sense of 'unity'? Which type of mark do I enjoy and would work here? How can I make this print look more exciting? I then came out with a pile of prints which excite me!
After the session, I took my prints home and looked at them in more depth. Which areas really had that sense of 'unity' and 'harmony'? Which parts did the colours just 'work'? What sections of line in the prints 'go together' and create something exciting? I took photos more focused on this and I really enjoy them, definitely wanting to take them further.
From this session, I found I really enjoyed the effect white spirit had on the ink. Kind of a tie-dye vibe on the prints, leaving what white to come through. I feel that white and any colour bring a sense of 'unity', it's very subtle and not 'chaotic' like other colours may be. I think I enjoyed the outcome of the positive prints more as they came out better than expected, however I did enjoy using the etching press. I feel I would need more time to master that skill and get the prints to be where I want them to be. Overall from the markmaking and the print session, I've learnt to not doubt myself as I can produce some really interesting things, even when your 100% not sure on the outcome or the process. It's just about learning and using those ideas in the right way.
